The Round Valley Indian Education Center

(RVIEC) is a comprehensive, community-based, resource center which promotes Native American Student academic achievement through direct instructional aide services, through assistance with alternative education programs, and with parent/student advocacy. The RVIEC utilizes progressive learning techniques, in coordination with conventional teaching styles, and a non-threatening learning environment, to improve an individual education plan and/or tutorial style which will benefit students in terms of comprehension and retention of the curriculum of the Round Valley Unified School District (RVUSD). Student records are kept confidential, and all assignments, materials, school referrals/reports, dates of tutorials, scheduled times for tutorials, and name of tutor are kept in the "Student History Folder" file system, which has been in place at the RVIEC since the school year 1995-1996.

Upon registration at the RVIEC students are scheduled on a "as needed" basis. Student and/or parents can request from one to three tutorial sessions per week, with each session lasting one hour. This staggered scheduling allows for the tutors to have more one-on-one time with the students. One-on-one tutorials are the only proven method that benefits the students' academic self-esteem.

Alternate Education

Some of the alternate education services provided by the RVIEC include General Education Development (GED) Preparation, Independent Study, instructional aide and providing a learning environment for Expulsion/Suspension and Home Study (medical emergency) students, Academic Counseling, and preparation for the California High School Proficiency Examinations. All of the students who are registered at the RVIEC are currently enrolled at the RV Unified School District, or enrolled in an Alternative Education Program, or have a modified schedule. This enables the student to retain an Independent Education Plan from the RVUSD and ensures that the student is provided a Teacher of Record (contact teacher). The RVIEC staff then works in coordination with the Teacher of Record to ensure that the student is receiving subject assignments and homework packets that are consistent with the material that the student would be receiving in the regular classroom of the RVUSD. Also, for all of these alternate education students, the "Student History Folder" becomes a written verification of attendance log and an assignment completion log. The staff at the RVIEC routinely uses the Tutorial Log to provide attendance records to the RVUSD. In addition, the RVIEC works with students from the Eel River Charter School who are in need of instructional aide.
