Round Valley
Community Theater, with sponsorship from CPIA and under the youthful
leadership of Michelle Lambert and Sara Hill, hosted Round Valley
Children's Choir in a Christmas music festival, Thursday, Friday,
and Saturday evening, December 20, 21, 22 '01. All events were free
and the community joined our celebration of Youth Alive!
The Round Valley Children's Choir has completed its Holiday Tour
in Covelo. What a busy season we had. Thursday morning, December
20, we performed at Round Valley Elementary School's Christmas 2001
for kindergarten through grade six. Then the Choir sang like angels
for parents and community Thursday evening. Friday evening, the
Children's Choir were invited to sing for the 4th Annual Christmas
Dinner and Party sponsored by Round Valley Indian Housing Authority's
Drug Elimination Program. Santa was there, the children sang jubilantly
and shone like ornaments on the Christmas tree. Saturday night was
our big show. The singers were veterans, now. They came poised,
committed and sang with their hearts.
AND we invited the "big kids" to show their stuff at this
program too.
Joining Round Valley Children's Choir were accomplished young musicians
from Mendocino County who were a delight to see and hear. Jason
Serfling, 21, of Fort Bragg, who's just finished his 9th CD, and
whose music is on the soundtrack of Hollywood's latest release,
The Majestic , with Jim Carrey. Jason treated us to his genius at
piano composition and mastery of the keyboard. 3 Men & a Bass,
four young musicians from Ukiah who have a new CD out, and who have
performed at Sundays in the Park and at Ukiah's First Night celebration,
sang stunning 4-part harmonies a capella - with youthful zest and
theatrical flair.
Michelle Lambert, who has performed throughout northern California,
twin-fiddled with her brother, Kenny, home for the holidays from
Florida State University, where he is studying and teaching violin
as a graduate student. He also plays with the Tallahassee Symphony
Orchestra. Michelle directed the children's choir, entertained with
some Americana fiddle tunes and danced up a storm with her Irish
dance shoes.
Tom Helme,
19, who has worked with college radio and was home from Humboldt
State University for Christmas, contributed his warmth and wit as
our master of ceremonies.
Jimmy
Humble's KZYX Radio show, Humble Pie, Saturday morning, 9 to 11am,
December 15, featured Michelle, Jason Serfling and 3 Men & a
Bass in a youth "SPECIAL," giving the teenagers some radio
experience. The young musicians performed samples of their live
music and CD's while publicizing the CPIA sponsored event in Covelo.
Americana Christmas
was a resounding success, a treat for the community and, best of
all, brought smiles, pride and a sense of accomplishment to our
dedicated young singers.
